What is l-15?
Table of Contents
What is l-15?
L-15 Medium (Leibovitz) was originally formulated for use in carbon dioxide (CO2) free systems requiring sodium bicarbonate. L-15 is buffered by the use of free basic amino acids, phosphate buffers and higher levels of galactose and sodium pyruvate to help maintain physiological pH control.
What is Leibovitz’s L-15 medium?
Leibovitz’s L-15 Medium supports the growth of HEP-2 monkey kidney cells and primary explants of embryonic and adult human tissue. L-15 is buffered by phosphates and free base amino acids instead of sodium bicarbonate. This medium is designed for supporting cell growth in environments without CO2 equilibration.
What is in RPMI media?
RPMI 1640 Medium contains biotin, vitamin B12, and PABA, which are not found in Eagle’s Minimal Essential Medium or Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium. In addition, the vitamins inositol and choline are present in very high concentrations. RPMI 1640 Medium contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors.
Does DMEM have serum?
Product Information. DMEM is a liquid serum-free media and a variant of BME, or Basal Medium Eagle, modified to contain up to four times more vitamins and amino acids, and two to four times more glucose than EMEM; making it an ideal supplement for most cell culture media applications.
What is normal DMEM?
DMEM (Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium) is a widely used basal medium for supporting the growth of many different mammalian cells. Cells successfully cultured in DMEM include primary fibroblasts, neurons, glial cells, HUVECs, and smooth muscle cells, as well as cell lines such as HeLa, 293, Cos-7, and PC-12.
What is RPMI medium used for?
RPMI is used when laboratory testing requires fresh, unfixed specimens such as flow cytometry as well as some FISH, molecular and cytogenetics tests.
Why is serum added to cell culture media?
Serum is vitally important as a source of growth and adhesion factors, hormones, lipids, and minerals for the culture of cells in basal media. In addition, serum also regulates cell membrane permeability and serves as a carrier for lipids, enzymes, micronutrients, and trace elements into the cell.
What is serum free media?
Serum-free media are media designed to grow a specific cell type or perform a specific application in the absence of serum. The use of serum-free media (SFM) represents an important tool, that allows cell culture to be done with a defined set of conditions as free as possible of confounding variables.
What is in DMEM medium?
Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium (DMEM) is modified to contain 4 mM L-glutamine, 4500 mg/L glucose, 1 mM sodium pyruvate, and 1500 mg/L sodium bicarbonate. Contains 4 mM L-glutamine, 4500 mg/L glucose, 1 mM sodium pyruvate, and 1500 mg/L sodium bicarbonate.
Why is RPMI media used?
It has traditionally been used for growth of human lymphocytes. This medium contains a great deal of phosphate and is formulated for use in a 5% carbon dioxide atmosphere. RPMI 1640 has traditionally been used for the serum-free expansion of human lymphoid cells.

Can you grow cells without serum?
AMSBIO announces XerumFree™—a new concept in cell culture that allows you to culture cells without the use of serum. XerumFree™ has been developed taking into account what is missing in traditional basal cell culture media to sustain growth of all cell types, which is a nutritional approach at the cellular level.

Why is serum-free media better?
Advantages of using serum-free media include a more consistent performance, increased growth and/or productivity, better control over physiological responsiveness, and to reduce risk of contamination by serum-borne adventitious agents in cell culture.
What is RPMI media used for?
RPMI-1640 medium has been used for the culture of human normal and neoplastic leukocytes. RPMI-1640, when properly supplemented, has demonstrated wide applicability for supporting growth of many types of cultured cells, including fresh human lymphocytes in the 72 hour phytohemaglutinin (PHA) stimulation assay.
