What size Padstone do I need?
Procedure
minimum padstone size | =155mm long |
---|---|
– minimum depth | = 150mm |
– thickness | = 100mm, to match blockwork |
(The actual length and depth of a padstone could be greater to suit masonry coursing.) | |
inner padstone (beam in line with the wall): |
How far should a steel beam sit on a Padstone?
Notes. 1 Padstones are not necessary where the flange dimension of the beam exceeds the length of the padstone given in this table. – the web of the beam should be over the centre of the wall. 3 The minimum length of steel bearing onto padstone should be 100mm.
Does an RSJ have to sit on a Padstone?
it is quite simple really the engineer would have given the size of the padstone to be used the bearing probably minimum 150mm. The steel should sit directly on the padstone. not on slate it can be packed with steel plates definitely not on expanding foam.
Can I use a concrete block as a Padstone?
The padstone would clearly need to be of a higher strength than the wall below (as it would otherwise be pointless). The most common choices are engineering bricks, dense concrete blocks, and proprietary concrete padstones. Other options include concrete placed in situ, concrete lintels, or even steel spreader plates.
Can you use engineering bricks as Padstones?
For padstone sizes less than 215mm x 100mm, engineering bricks will be suitable.
Can I make my own Padstone?
If you want to make your own, go for a 1:1.5:3 mix (1pt cement, 1.5pts sand, 3pts 20mm aggregate). You can cast in situ or make up a box for it. Bear in mind it takes about 28 days for concrete to reach its full strength. The mix described above gives a (probable) crushing strength of about 40N/mm2.
Can you cut a Padstone in half?
KIAB Super Member. No you cannot cut down padstones, could use 140mm padstone,10mm bed & a 10mm steel shims,(bearing plate as some call them),just make sure they are large enough..
