What is axion particle?
An axion (/ˈæksiɒn/) is a hypothetical elementary particle postulated by the Peccei–Quinn theory in 1977 to resolve the strong CP problem in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). If axions exist and have low mass within a specific range, they are of interest as a possible component of cold dark matter.
Who discovered the axion?
The axion is the most popular solution to the strong CP problem. It appeared first in a model proposed by Peccei and Quinn (5). Their idea was to promote ˉθ to a dynamical quantity, rather than simply a constant parameter as in the Standard Model.
Is dark matter made of quarks?
The particle is composed of six quarks — the fundamental particles that usually combine in trios to make up protons and neutrons.
Why are axions cold?
axions are non-relativistic and therefore fall within the category of CDM. (CDM). This is a zero momentum condensate and so constitutes cold dark matter. If boson particles have very light mass and hence high density, they tend to go into a single quantum state.
Why are axions good dark matter candidates?
Axions, one of the leading candidates for dark matter, may be able to be converted to photons (and vice versa) under the right conditions. If we can cause and control their conversion, we might discover our first particle beyond the Standard Model, and possibly solve the dark matter and strong CP problems as well.
Has axion been detected?
“We think axions could exist, but we haven’t discovered them yet. You can think of axions as ghost particles. They can be anywhere in the universe, but they don’t interact strongly with us so we don’t have any observations of them yet.”
Why is cold dark matter cold?
Cold refers to the fact that the dark matter moves slowly compared to the speed of light, while dark indicates that it interacts very weakly with ordinary matter and electromagnetic radiation.
Has dark matter been created?
As such, dark matter would have been created in the Big Bang together with all other constituting elements of the universe as we see it today.
Is dark matter subatomic?
Most modern-day astronomers think dark matter likely consists of subatomic particles with properties that are rather different from more familiar protons and neutrons. The reigning candidate for dark matter is called a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle or WIMP.
What is an axion Haloscope?
The axion haloscope was designed to scope microwave photon signals from the axions in our galactic halo, hence the name. The signal power can be enhanced by the resonance effect that occurs when the axion mass matches the natural frequency of the detection system.
Where can I buy axion Crypto?
AXN is available for purchase from the market via Sushiswap, or at a discounted rate in our Token Accelerator for a 5-20% discount. If buying in our accelerator, you need to ‘stake’ your AXN for a minimum of 120 days.
How do you detect an axion?
Axions or ALPs produced by astrophysical objects could be detected by terrestrial telescopes. The CERN Axion Search Telescope (CAST) at CERN, European Oragnization for Nuclear Research, was designed to detect axions produced in the Sun’s core where x-rays scatter off strong electric fields.
