What is a link bar lifter?
The link bar lifters are usually used on engines not already set up for roller lifters, which need an alignment system to keep the rollers aligned with the cam. Easy way to change over a flat tappet engine to roller cam, but expensive.

A lifter is a cylinder that sits between a car’s camshaft and the cylinder valves. As the camshaft moves over the top of the lifter, it actuates, temporarily opening the valve. And because the intake and exhaust valve need to open at different times, each has its own separate lifter.

Can you replace lifters without replacing cam?
The camshaft does not necessarily need to be replaced when replacing lifters, and often times is not. In the case of a 4 cylinder, especially, I would replace lifters without doing the camshaft since you can replace the lifters without removing the head.
