What mode is major scale?
Ionian mode
The major scale is called the Ionian mode and the relative minor is the Aolian Mode — so you already know 2 of them — that just leaves 5 left to learn! There are two ways of teaching modes, in this lesson we explore both approaches.
How do modes relate to scales?
A scale is an ordered sequence of notes with a start and end. A mode is a permutation upon a scale that is repeatable at the octave, such that the start and end points are shifted. For example, the major scale is repeatable at the octave.
How do you remember major scale modes?
Another good way to remember the modes is in terms of their darkness, or how many lowered scale degrees the modes have….The order of modes in terms of darkness are:
- Lydian (#4)
- Ionian.
- Mixolydian (b7)
- Dorian (b3, b7)
- Aeolian (b3, b6, b7)
- Phrygian (b2, b3, b6, b7)
- Locrian (b2, b3, b5, b6, b7)
Is Dorian minor or major?

The Dorian scale and the natural minor scale (known as Aeolian in modal parlance) are both considered minor modes. In major scales, the interval between the root and the third note is a major third (a distance of four semitones).
What is C mixolydian?
The C Mixolydian is a seven-note scale, also called C Dominant Scale. Colored circles in the diagram mark the notes in the scale (darker color highlighting the root notes). In the fretboard pattern, the first root note is on the 6th string, 8th fret.
