John Garcia (born September 4, 1970) is an American singer and songwriter. He is best known as the vocalist and founding member of stoner rock bands Kyuss, Slo Burn, Unida and Hermano. Garcia performed in Vista Chino with former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork.

As a drummer I couldn’t make him play my songs. I wasn’t going to compromise my heart and soul and play drums for Josh to make money in a band I started. So I left the band. I was a confused, angry and sad 19-year-old idealist who sacrificed my love of my band for what I believed in.

Brant Bjork selected the name from the undead monster found in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. In 1989 the band recorded their eponymous debut EP, Sons of Kyuss, which was their only release to feature Chris Cockrell on bass.

This album was much more successful, being critically acclaimed and to this day is considered to be a classic stoner rock record. It was not long before Kyuss were becoming popular, in 1993 they toured with Metallica for nine dates. Despite this, Oliveri left soon afterwards and was replaced by Scott Reeder.

Stoner is derived from stoned, which originates in biblical times. Back in the day, so-called sinners were pelted with stones as a form of punishment. Being stoned was more than a physical act, there was also the element of public shaming as your peers hurled insults and rocks at you.
