How Much Do Handpans Cost? Quality handpans and Hang® (i.e. nitrided with stable architecture) cost between $2,000 to $10,000. A good one bought direct from a maker will cost $2,000 to $3,500. Although rare, used top-shelf handpans have sold for as much as $10,000.

How much do pan drums cost?

In short, you can expect to pay $1,500 – $3,000+ for a Hang® style Handpan. If that’s more than you’re willing to spend but you love the sound, there is a cheaper alternative known as Tongue Drum which produces a similar sound. These instruments range in price between $150 – $800 and beyond.

What’s the difference between a hang drum and a handpan?

The original makers insist that the title of the instrument be Hang for their brand of hand pan. While the term Hang Drum is commonly used verbally, in writing it is most proper to refer to instruments made by the company Pan Art as simply “hang” and all others as “hand pans”.

You may not think that you’re hitting your handpan as hard as a hammer, but over time, playing too hard with your fingers can still change the tuning of your handpan. Yes, the handpan is made out of steel but remember it’s still a fragile instrument.

  1. MAJOR: Does it sound happy, joyful or peaceful?
  2. MINOR: Does it sound sad, melancholic or tragic?
  3. FLAVORFUL: Does it sound exotic or ethnic? (e.g. Asian or Middle-Eastern)

How long does a handpan last?

As a rule of thumb, we believe that a Handpan should remain in tune for 3 years when played properly and does not suffer any major damage (such as being dropped on the floor or being thrown around a lot).

    • Can you tune a steel drum?

    Tuning steel drums requires a lot of skill. Normally, I recommend persons use a trained steel drum tuner, but I realize this may not be possible in Mauritius. When your steel drum needs tuning, you may have to ship the steel drum back to the supplier and have them to tune it for you.
