Is it better to size up or down on bike frame?
If your arm span is longer than your height, go for a bigger frame. If it’s shorter, get the smaller one. On a bigger bike, the reach to the handlebars will be longer. If you have proportionally longer arms, you are likely to feel more comfortable on a bigger frame.

How does trek measure frame size?
Trek frame size used to be measured by the length of the seat tube. But modern mountain bike geometry is based on reach, not seat tube length. Alpha sizing is simpler and helps you find the right fit by the measurement that matters most.
Is it better to buy a bike too small or too big?
As long as the standover is comfortable, you should be fine on the large. but the standover cannot be adjusted, whereas the stems, seatpost, etc can — therefore I say it’s a bit better to have a slightly too small bike than one that is too large.
How do I determine bike frame size?
Place the end of a tape measure at the exact center point of the gear crank (the metal post that runs through the center of the bike’s chain sprocket). Then run the tape measure up to the top of the tube. Measure to the point where the tube ends. This will give you the length of the seat tube which is the frame size.
How do I know if my bike is the right size?
Look for listed standover heights, and compare that number to your inseam. The difference between your inseam and the standover height should fall within the target ranges. (For example, if you have a 30” inseam, you’ll want a road bike with a 29” standover height.)
