Should I get a BTB or a jazz bass?

How big does a bass need to be in a band?
Depending on the size of the band as well as the style of music, it is possible that the bass doesn’t need to be much more than “bottom” on which the horns sit on and soar over… felt, but not really prominent, if you know what I mean. I mean, the traditional Jazz bass for smaller groups is a doghouse (URB) and they don’t “cut” at all, IMO.
