What is a TLUD stove?
A top-lit updraft gasifier (also known as a TLUD) is a micro-kiln used to produce charcoal, especially biochar, and heat for cooking. A TLUD pyrolyzes organic material, including wood or manure, and uses a reburner to eliminate volatile byproducts of pyrolization.
How does a Woodgas stove work?
Wood gasification stoves use sophisticated combustion engineering realized in the form of cheap sheet metal forced air stoves. The combustion air is forced into the burning chamber in two layers. The first layer of combustion air partially burns the fuel to create a gas.
How does an updraft gasifier work?
In updraft gasifiers, fuel moves downward and gas upward. In co-current gasifiers, the fuel and gas move in the same direction, usually downward (downdraft gasifiers), but the movement can also be upward.
What is downdraft gasifier?
A downdraft gasifier is the typical configuration used for bioenergy production. This well-established technology allows the production of syngas with low tar, due to the syngas passes through the combustion zone at high temperature and the subsequent dimensioning which in turn leads to the thermal cracking of tars.
What is the difference between charcoal and biochar?
One major difference between charcoal and biochar is the temperature at which it is made. Charcoal is made at roughly 400 degrees Celsius whereas biochar is made between 600–1000 Celsius. Making biochar at lower temperatures causes volatiles (smokeyness) to be left behind, which has been found to limit plant growth.
What are the advantages of downdraft gasifier?
1.3 Downdraft Gasifier
Advantages | Disadvantages |
---|---|
Simple and consolidated process | Need of biomass with small size (1–3 cm) |
Low tar content | Difficult to scaling up |
High probability of bridging phenomena | |
High probability of clinkering phenomena |
Why is gasification better than combustion?
In summary, gasification has inherent advantages over combustion for emissions control. Emission control is simpler in gasification than in combustion because the produced syngas in gasification is at higher temperature and pressure than the exhaust gases produced in combustion.
What are the disadvantages of biochar?
According to ETH Zurich, some of the drawbacks of biochar:
- crop yield may decline due to sorption of water and nutrients by the biochar.
- reduced efficacy of pesticides due to sorption by the biochar.
- some biochars are a source of contaminants like heavy metals etc.
How do I activate biochar?
Other ways to activate biochar To do this all, take your finished compost and mix it with some water. Then add your biochar and the liquid compost soak in. For optimal results, you can try adding a bit of sugar to the compost tea, and oxygenate it for 12 to 24 hours before adding the biochar.
