Can you dowel breadboard ends?

On small boards, using dowels is an acceptable method of attaching breadboard ends. Once glued and driven home, they’ll keep the main board from cupping. Screws and nails are pretty straightforward.

Can you pocket hole breadboard ends?

Attaching the “breadboard end” with pocket screws prevents that movement and will cause the panel to crack over time. Pocket holes can be a great shortcut, but sometimes you save more by spending a little extra time to do the job properly. This is one of those cases.

A mitered corner is one of the weaker joints in woodworking because it relies on gluing end grain to end grain. But there are good reasons to make a mitered corner. For one thing, it hides unsightly end grain. And wood grain can be made to wrap continuously around a mitered corner.

Since the biscuits do have some slop in the slots they do not have to be as precisely located as dowel holes. Biscuits don’t really add much strength. They are more for alignment, where the dowels will add a good deal of strength.
