According to INDA, “Nonwoven fabrics are broadly defined as sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fiber or filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally or chemically. They are flat, porous sheets that are made directly from separate fibers or from molten plastic or plastic film.

- Step 1: Collect fabric swatch. Collect fabric swatch for which you are going to find EPI and PPI.
- Step 2: Make a square of one sq. inch on the sample.
- Step 3: Count number of ends and Picks inside those squares.
Why is PPI more than EPI?
EPI is measured by Counting Glass. Normally EPI is more than PPI in fabric. Picks per inch is the number of weft yarns, per inch length of woven fabric that means how many weft yarns are contained in an inch of fabric. Basically, higher picks per inch creates compact, dense and finer fabric.
What is PPI and EPI?
PPI: picks per inch, the number of weft threads in one inch of woven fabric. EPI: ends per inch, the number of warp threads in one inch of woven fabric. Method:
- Cut 5 swatches from the different places of the fabric.
- Weight all test swatches accurately and calculate the average weight of swatches.
- Multiply the average weight of swatches by 100 to calculate the GSM of the sample fabric. (Normally, the area of round GSM cutter is 1/100 square meters.)
