We are an international non-profit that brings people together to fight avoidable blindness. With our network of partners we mentor, train and inspire local teams to fight blindness in their communities. We believe that no one should live a life of unnecessary blindness, simply because of where they were born.

The current Flying Eye Hospital is actually Orbis’s third aircraft. But don’t worry – our previous two planes have gone to good homes! Our first DC-8 is now in Beijing’s Aviation Museum and our second plane, a DC-10, lives in Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson.

Virtual Training Our Flying Eye Hospital may not be traveling, but our mission is still in flight. Thanks to our supporters and the hard work of our Flying Eye Hospital team we were able to pivot our in-person training sessions and take our sight-saving work online throughout the COVID-19 pandemic!
Who started Orbis?
The concept of Orbis began in the late 1960s when Dr. David Paton, a renowned US ophthalmologist, was a faculty member of The Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins. After extended experiences abroad, Dr. Paton recognized the lack of eye care and ophthalmic teaching in developing nations where blindness was widespread.
