Can you cycle on the South Downs Way?
The South Downs Way is 100 miles long running from Winchester to Eastbourne and takes anywhere from 2 to 4 days for most cyclists, although we know that some of the fitter riders have done it in a day! We recommend using a mountain bike to cycle the South Downs Way due to the terrain.
Can you cycle the South Downs Way on a gravel bike?
Gravel bikes and cross bikes (road-style drop-bar bikes with wide, deep-tread tyres) are fine if you’re used to riding them already. Travel light. You’ll enjoy the ride most if you’re not carrying too much weight.
Can you cycle the South Downs Way in a day?
Quite a proportion of the South Downs Way for walkers is on bridleway anyway, so cycling it is a very similar route. There are people who’ll try riding it in a day, but that’s pretty hardcore – you’d need to be a fit mountain biker to do it in even two days, and three is probably more realistic.
Is the South Downs Way flat?
This is a particularly beautiful area, and almost all of the route sits in the South Downs National Park. Most days include walking up to a ridge and then enjoying the relatively flat walk for a few hours whilst you enjoy the view.

To cycle the South Downs Way takes 2 or 3 days if you are used to off road cycling. It is possible to do it in a day but that’s an extreme challenge! There’s about 12,600ft (3800m) of climb as well as the 100 miles (160km) of distance.
Can you do the South Downs Way on a road bike?
The SDW isn’t suitable for a road bike or a hybrid. We recommend (and hire out) hardtail mountain bikes. The big, grippy tyres and front suspension make them comfortable to ride and get you easily over most bumps and ruts.

The South Downs Way is mainly known for being a popular long-distance walking trail, however, it is also suitable for cycling. Due to the chalky, gravelly and sometimes muddy terrain, mountain bikes or gravel bikes are recommended – it is not suitable for road bikes.
