Do you need to tether a forward-facing car seat?
As soon as you install a forward-facing car seat with a harness (or convert your rear-facing to forward), you must use a top tether. Top tethers are meant to secure forward-facing seats to keep them from tipping forward in the event of a crash. Without the tether attached, a seat can be thrown 4 – 6 inches forward.
Can 2.5 year old sit forward-facing?
The American Academy of Pediatrics guideline — since March 2011 — is to keep the children rear facing until they are a minimum of 2 years old. Using a rear-facing car seat longer reduces the risks of serious injury.

How do you install a forward facing car seat without an anchor?
Put the seat belt in the automatic locking mode
- Find the seat belt path in your car seat.
- Insert the seat belt strap into the car-seat belt path.
- After the belt is all the way out – insert the belt slack back into the retractor.
- Now pull up on the seat belt strap.
- Small kids require forward facing car seat.
Do all car seats have a tether?
If your car doesn’t have tether points, you can have them fitted by some mechanics. Obviously there is a cost involved, and not all child car seats require the use of a top tether, so in most cases we would recommend looking for a different child car seat without a tether.
