What is a TFT thyroid blood test for?
The thyroid gland is situated in the neck and produces two hormones Thyroxine or T4 and Tri-iodothyronine or T3. Thyroid function tests (TFTs) are a group of tests requested to help check how the thyroid gland is working, to diagnose thyroid gland disorders and to monitor the response of thyroid disorders to treatment.

When should TFT be checked?
Suggested intervals for TFTs are every six weeks after radio-iodine treatment in the first six months. If within reference range then monitor at 9, 12 and 18 months. Measure TSH and FT4 at two and six months after surgery, and then TSH once a year for adults, children and young people who have had a hemithyroidectomy.
Why TFT test is done?
TFTs are used for diagnosis and to monitor treatment of common thyroid gland disorders. These biochemical tests have both high analytical sensitivity and specificity and well established clinical utility.
Does TFT test require fasting?
Most doctors will suggest you do not fast before your thyroid function test. Research shows that fasting, especially early in the morning, may impact TSH levels. A fasting test typically results in higher TSH levels versus one done in the afternoon.
