How do you make synthetic musk?
An artificial musk was obtained by Albert Baur in 1888 by condensing toluene with isobutyl bromide in the presence of aluminium chloride, and nitrating the product. It was discovered accidentally as a result of Baur’s attempts at producing a more effective form of trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Why are nitro musks banned?
A restricted use warning was placed on musk ketone. They found that nitro musk compounds do not degrade easily, causing them to be highly stable and ubiquitous in the environment [5]. Nitro musks have been largely replaced by polycyclic musks due to banning of these compounds in several countries [6, 7].
What does synthetic musk smell like?
While each synthetic molecule didn’t quite reach the essence of real deer musk, they did produce a slightly different, cleaner odor. Since Bauer’s accidental discovery, multiple years of research have created several types of synthetic musks and each offers a different smell, ranging from sweet and powdery to metallic.
Is Timbersilk the same as Iso E Super?
A superior, higher impact version of Iso E Super. Higher in the desirable gamma isomer than Iso E Super, Timbersilk has also been enhanced with another high-impact material by IFF. Exceptional in candles but great in almost all applications.
Is Iso E Super harmful?
Some people are anosmic to ISO E Super, at least in small amounts, which means that they can’t really smell the note. The problem, however, is that there are a number of people who get severe headaches from the synthetic, even when they can’t detect it.
